For some, the number 13 comes with a ton of superstitions. And while this year marked the thirteenth time Marketing Genome was a part of San Diego Comic-Con, there was nothing unlucky about it.
Over 150,000 comic book culture fans listened to panel events, dressed up as their favorite characters, met fellow comic fans, and checked out their favorite brands’ booths during the unforgettable four-day event. We were lucky enough to work behind the scenes with some of these brands, helping them plan their marketing campaigns and create their Comic-Con booths. It wasn’t just an incredible experience — it was a huge success.

When was the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con?
This year’s San Diego Comic-Con occurred at the San Diego Convention Center on July 20-23, 2023. Fans attended multiple events and activities every day from 7 a.m. to midnight.
How many booths did Marketing Genome create for the event this year?
At the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, there were over 550 exhibitors. Marketing Genome created ten booths for clients, including Konami, Sandland, Tamagotchi, Bandai/Marriot Marquis, Dark Horse, Heroes & Villains, Rocklove, Boom, Naruto, and Zynga. Our client’s booths are always up-to-date with the latest technology and fabrication techniques as our team stays on top of new advancements and incorporates them into our designs.
How many team members went, and what did they do?
This year, 15 people from Marketing Genome traveled to San Diego to help with project management. They also had assistance from about 75 additional people from the I/D Union support teams. These individuals helped clients prepare, set up, and take down their booths. We were thrilled everything went off without a hitch, and there were zero problems. It’s incredibly rare to have as much work as this crew had without any hiccups, but that’s exactly what happened. Not a single piece of freight was damaged, nor were there any graphic misprints or items that didn’t fit. Everything was perfect.
Did Marketing Geome incorporate any new design elements this year?
Our team unveiled a redesign of the Dark Horse 50’x70′ booth. The unique fabrication, use of display cases, and eye-catching graphics allowed Dark Horse to get the attention and foot traffic they wanted.
Were there any particular challenges Marketing Genome faced this year?
Unlike last year, there were no specific challenges, just many moving parts. The only “challenge” our team encountered was having so much work to complete at one show. A lot of effort goes into the logistical and workforce aspects of shipping more than 135 crates into San Diego — and then unloading and assembling them in two and a half days.
